The first instance that defined Split: The distraction

Alone in a hotel room’s balcony. Dark. 11pm. Just after the long trip from Sarajevo. A bottle of wine on the table. Looking at the dark, ancient Adriatic.

“Sea. What an amazing, overwhelming, frightening thing. It is natural and poetic; physical and mystical at the same time. Real, as it storms through the coasts of Islands, turning boats upside down, and as it is the home and life of many creatures of this world. .Yet, it turns into something else in one of Hokusai’s magical paintings. It becomes the prison for Robinson Crouse; freedom for the young Sinbad; and a deep trap for the curious in Poe’s Maelstrom. It was dark and evil in Japanese folk tales and treacherously beatiful under the control of capricious Greek gods. We imagine sea as one of us.”

That was pretty much what I was thinking, sitting there, like a nocturnal turtle, when I spotted one, single glittering light in the vast darkness of the sea. Was it a loner fisherman, trying to make an early start to the fishing season? Was it a forgotten sign that warned the lost sailors? Or was I simply dreaming? I will never know. What I know is the fact that I could not think anything else but the source of that light. There it was, making me look at that single point, probably preventing me to think the thousand other meanings of the sea.

As sleep came over me with the changing tides, I wondered how many distracting lights there were in the world; which one of those lights, I managed to see past, and which ones stayed in my mind.

This first Croatian evening was a peaceful and serene one. The Sirens were silent, and that was more dangerous than their songs.

* First picture is Hokusai's painting: The Great Wave off Kanagawa, 2. Second picture is a painting by Liliane Tellier: Sinbad le Marin, Third is my photograph of the Adriatic.

The unexpected normalcy at the gates of Klis

I was somewhere close to Sarajevo airport. I did not have time. I had to go to a distant city of an old, powerless emperor, but, like all the travelers who do not have a plan; I could not actually go anywhere. It was three hours and 30 miles later that I realized hitchhiking was not the way to go.

I managed to make somebody to drive me a to a town center, where I met Samir; a big, blue eyed fellow with a lot of wit but not so much grace. After a very though and fruitless bargaining, there I was, in a pretty neat Volkswagen Sedan, going west with uncomfortable speed.

We drove through tiny roads, heroically entering small, dark tunnels with millions of warning signs on them, and dangerously rejecting the call of mesmerizing landscape in each curve of the road.

And we talked mostly about soccer and food. I avoided asking anything about the war as much as I could. It was hard to do so, as my eye was constantly catching images of countless cemeteries along the road. It was futile anyways.

I just innocently asked Samir about his family and he told me about her mother, who died recently of breast cancer. Suddenly, his face went dark and he told me:

“It was, of course, the war.”

He said:

“It was too much for her. Not hearing from me during the war, losing my father.”

He continued, without me asking:

“I searched for him for months, you know. We never saw his body again, but I am sure he is dead”

Here it was, just slipping from the man’s lips: A too-well-known, almost cliché dialogue. It was cheesy, it was blunt, it was simple. But, somehow, there, in that car, and on that road, it was too painful to listen, and too simple to ignore.

It was real.

And he continued even further.

“Well, now I have a little kid, a girl. She is the only meaning in life for me”

At that moment, thinking about the dramatic construct of a Hollywood film, I expect a mine to explode, or a sniper to hit Samir on the forehead.

I closed my eyes.

Nothing happened, but silence fell between us.

Hours later, that silence was awarded with the calming view of an Adriatic Sunset.
The war was over.

Prince Eugene's Legacy

WAR!!!

That was all I could think about when our small plane arrived at the Sarejevo airport. I was sad, I was troubled, I was worried. I knew Sarejevo from many places. I read about the town where many were killed by Serbian shells. I read about a bridge, which failed to survive, yet revived. I read about a woman, who lost not only her legs, but her kids as well. I read the story of the Pakistani fighters rushing to this city to save it from the infidels. I read about the kids who lost their limbs with a sniper bullet. I read it from New York Times, I read it from Cumhuriyet, I read it from Radikal, I read it from Nedim Gursel, I read it from Firuzan. I read it from Wikipedia. All of them confirmed what I felt at the time. Here I was, on the edge of an epic city, war torn, but proud with her bullet ridden minarets and churches, humble with her small, paved roads, which were labeled with yellow stripes to mark the “mine-cleaned areas.”

In my mind, she was a city defined by war... What arrogance!!!

WAR!!!

It crushed everything that came in its way: families, buildings, towns, bridges, beliefs, loves… But, it did one more horrible thing. It defined the lands that it destroyed. It became impossible to look beyond this thick fog of war. It created symbols of destruction for us to remember. Nobody knew that they were impossible to forget. The gorgeous, green lands that were crowned with magnificent heights all around, the beautifully cheerful people sitting next to me became meaningful only if they were touched by the war. The ancient and unique traditions of Sarajevo’s people were forgotten. The Christians and Muslims of the city became relevant only because of their role in the war. The mosques represent the resistance to the Serbian attacks and the churches represent tolerance. Nothing else really mattered. It was impossible for me to wend off the image of bullet holes in the mosques and dead bodies of children.

I realized, I could not write about a normal day in Sarajevo. Even if I could, nobody would listen.

It was so unfair.

Modern Masallara Özlem

Biliyorsunuz Alman sahnelerinde,
Herkes istediğini deneyebilir;
Bugün de dekor ve makineleri,
Esirgemenizi beklemiyorum.
Kullanın,
Büyük ve küçük gökyüzü ışıklarını,
Yıldızları da harcayabilirsiniz.
Su, ateş ve kayalıklar,
Hayvanlar ve kuşlar,
Hepsi bol miktarda mevcut.
Böylece, bu dar ahşap sahnemizde,
Boy gösterir bütün yaratılış;
Ve ölçülü bir hızla,
Gökten başlayıp dünyaya geçer,
Sonunda da cehenneme gider.
(Faust)

Bu sefer Prens Phillips’in hastalıklarını okumadan.

The 2007 election in Turkey

The 2007 elections were interesting... What I will write is nothing new, and nothing insightful. It is just a personal reading of the situation...

First of all, I am proud of my people... No fights, almost flawless election with no disputes and more than 84 percent of the population voted. This is very very encouraging...

I see AK party is a populist, center-right, and extremely practical party... It is only normal that they won such great support (over 45 percent). They manage to achieve a considerable success in major economic parameters and as an economically and politically liberal, yet socially conservative party, they really hit the mainstream of Turkish society.

The republican-elite, which consists of high level bureaucrats, army, academy and a considerable number of the middle-class intellectuals were unable to create an opposition that can communicate with the majority of Turkish people. A hard-liner secularist cause, or conspiracy theories, such as Kurds -with the help of America- separating to join Northern Iraq could not (and cannot) make a lot of Turkish people change their minds. And of course, the annoying and unhidden distrust of the Republican elite to the people's choice is troubling. "They would not know. They will turn this country to Iran" some would tell you, referring to the "masses."

I think, the real reason behind the paranoia of the republican-elite is that the traditional power centers (such as the seats of bureaucrats, faculty positions, military, etc) are in jeopardy. Hence, their fear of losing power is immense...

Amazingly, the votes that would go for a left party went probably to AK party, instead of CHP. Ataturk's party, which once was proud to represent the "masses" has been trapped in an out-of-touch nationalism, and become an alienated elitist party. CHP and its leader Deniz Baykal should be thankful to the 20 percent they got in this election. Nevertheless, they still seem to blame the man on the street for not 'seeing' the 'evil' in AK party... Would it continue its politics in the same manner, it would lose even more votes in the coming elections.

MHP, the nationalists, made a come-back. This party, of all parties, I am uncomfortable with the most. I have to say that there is a good number of people, who would "die" for this party... And, the rising nationalism and the increasing clashes with PKK make things easier for the hard-liners... Within a democratic setting, it is probably better to represent MHP's ideas in the Parliament than in the streets... Still, I would prefer a Parliament without this party...

Another development is the new concept of independents (to avoid the 10 percent threshold). More than twenty Kurdish independents managed to get into the Parliament - a number enough to form a group. Also, couple of independents, including Mehmet Ufuk Uras, a socialist, who I voted for, managed to get into the Parliament. I think, this is a very positive development. Not because, they will create magnificent changes, but because they might pave the way to greater political formations, which will be the voice of the under-represented groups in Turkey... This may be the much needed relief between the over-exaggerated (thanks to the western media as well) Islam vs. secularism issue.

We should not dream about a revolution or a dramatic change, however... One person is one person, and politics is not a game of indivuduals, but of trends, parties, ideas, and, of course, the 'masses'.

As a last word, let me give you my personal take on. I do not agree with AK party for three particular reasons... First, their economical and political choices are extremely concordant with the global neo-liberal capitalist ideology... I believe that neo-liberal capitalism create a new kind of enslavement: A selfish and often depressing enslavement to the 'popular' (popular wars, popular "idols" popular science, popular artist")... Second, they are socially and religiously conservative, which I full-heartidly oppose. Most importantly, their hegemony on the votes of the "lower-class" neighborhoods steals away a lot of power from socialist, leftist parties, which I believe is a much needed force in the Turkish politics.

The current state of the Parliament will, I think, witness the clash of the independents and the nationalists. The classic clash between the secular establishment and Islamic trends will go on... The army's role in all this, might be an interesting point of discussion in the coming days... These discussions, hopefully, will be based less on conspiracy theories, and more on real issues.

Turkey, I believe, for several historical and sociological reasons, can be more than a "good follower of the global system to be the next South-Korea." From within Turkey, I think, novel ideas and movements that can introduce indigenous patterns to social and political landscape of the region (and of the world) can emerge: Trends that move beyond and redefine the traditional categories of class, nation, race, ethnicity and religious group.

The uttermost concern for me, in this election and in the future, however, is the sad situation of the Turkish intellectual realm. Unfortunately, Turkish intellectuals and academics are trapped in a petrified state of internal conflict, where charismatic power dominates over academic achievement -or sometimes reason. This land can, like I mentioned before, has a significant economic, cultural and historical potential to contribute to the world's intellectual discourse. However, for this, Turkish intelligentsia should transform into a state through which independent, rational and free discourse can be produced, and disseminated... Unfortunately, as practical as they are, I do not think Erdogan and his friends have the intellectual tools or the will to support such an intellectual framework.

The Quest for the Biological Dome

Getting fat is an important intellectual challenge.

No! I am not talking about the health issues, or the great nostalgia (i.e. Oh, God! I was 10 kilograms less two years ago). I am not even talking about the social implications of getting fat.

No!

I am talking about the great intellectual quest of seeking coherence and getting fat is fundamentally related to the existential search for the meaning of life.

First and foremost, an important and socially recognized body part is added to the traditional body parts you already have:

The Tummy!!!

An intellectual should explain to himself/herself, “the meaning of the tummy,” and of course, for this, one has to search for the origins.

If you are like me (which definitely should be tested if we are to generalize), one day you will have (or already have had) a great epiphany, which I call the day of reconciliation. In that important day, you realize suddenly that you have a tummy.

I guess, this realization can happen in various ways, as it happened to me in a rather strange way:

The day of reconciliation for me was a sunny day in the seashore. Lovely day, I would say… I, who is awkwardly called by his mother “su samuru” (beaver), was in the sea. I love resting on my back on the water, slowly moving my hands and feet to prevent myself sinking, and letting my body float freely. It was, I always have thought, the perfect position for the small bourgeois intellectual. Somehow, I had the sudden urge to look to the shore. What I saw, instead of several umbrellas and sun-bathing people, a great dome of skin and hair.

God! I thought, I grew the biological Hagia Sophia. And what happened? Of course, I panicked, not because Ekin will divorce me –she probably would have done it months before if she wanted to, but because I now had to make sense about the tummy. It was like that equipment you bought with the grant money, which was not really related to the research project.

Hence, my friends, started the great intellectual quest for making the tummy coherent. And, it was, during this quest, I understood why Eco wrote Foucault's Pendulum.

Epistemology and knowing - variations on Popper

I finally had some time to read some Karl Popper, and also some Adorno. I am particularly interested in the conflicts in these philosophers' understanding of the "rational progress," "enlightenment" and "knowledge"

Note to Reader: We have been talking about these issues for a while with a friend. I decided to initiate a written conversation, so that we can discuss this issue.

My take home message from these readings is that knowledge should be understood on three levels. On one level is the Popper's "universal knowledge" (or reality), second level comprises the "epistemological truth," (or what we can observe true the implications of reality), and on the last level is the "mythical, or historical truth." I have to warn you that as you know, these are hard concepts to tackle intellectually, and they are even harder to write about. :)

Let's start with arguing from a perspective of Putnam and other philosophers that there is 'true' knowledge to be found. I would argue then that Popper's description of scientific knowledge is the only rational epistemology. The problem arises, when we consider the biological limitations of the humans. Through any epistemology, the 'true' knowledge will be distorted by (1) the theoretical/historical/social observation bias even within the sciences ( e.g. a biologist's vs. physicist observation), (2) instrument bias (e.g. perceptive limitations of our brains and the tools we use to alter/increase this perception) (3) the epistemological bias (scientific, religious, humanitarian ways of knowing)... Having said this, I would argue that Popper's concept of falsibility is problematic, as the process of falsification is essentially biased. Falsification eliminates the epistemological bias. However, it would not eliminate the 1st and 2nd biases, which scientific epistemology by definition depends.

In addition, I would argue that his idea of knowledge accumulation (the evolution of knowledge through the process of falsification) is problematic. He argued elsewhere that historicism (i.e. the notion that human history has a direction and pattern to be predicted) is flawed.... However, his idea of betterment of the scientific knowledge depends on the accumulation of knowledge and patterns (the accumulation of falsified theories). And precisely because of this, I think his epistemology needs revision.

Such criticism of Popper would seemingly place me with the same camp with critical theorists, such as Adorno and Foucault. In fact, I would agree with Adorno that humans tend to push for a "blind domination, domination in a triple sense: the domination of nature by human beings, domination of nature within human beings, and, in both of these forms of domination." I would claim that this sort of domination is more of a desire of the human psyche, rather than a reality as Adorno would argue. This desire, I think, is the main source of bias that separates any human epistemology from an hypothetical, perfect epistemology. I would add, however and not withstanding the fact that I have problems with Popper's arguments, that Popper's epistemology has still much more relevancy to knowledge production than critical theory.

I think the obsession (stems for the desire for domination) with truth both in the rational academia and the faith based communities is the origin of our problems. The epistemological claims to the 'real' creates myths (religions, theories, etc.)... I think, instead of searching for absolute truth, we need to focus on understanding the patterns, associations and networks within a defined context. In addition, we need to introduce human biological/cultural bias into the epistemology of fallibility. Thus, I think a rational scholar's intellectual tools should be set first to reveal the cultural and physical context and then to understand the basic logical connections ( i.e. observed links between observations) within this context. Then, these connections should be set to the Popperian test of fallsibility not to reject results, but to redefine the context.

Let me explain myself with an example. I, with predispositions, a certain training, and a particular personal history will go and study Turkish villages. I would assume (1) my results will depends on my inherently biased (not necessarily wrong) observations, (2) the inherently biased ethnographic data from the villages, (3) the genetic data and (4) statistical, and quantitative methods. Based on these I will reveal patterns and connections.... The important issue is not the truth value of these connections, and patterns, but the accuracy of the context in which these results were produced. In other words, my results are the 'absolute truth' in the context of 'my mind,' 'my subjects' narratives' 'my techniques,' etc. Hence, falsibility would not necessarily work to disprove my results, but it would falsify (or redefine) the context of the observations. For instance, at some point, if your daughter, who becomes a famous anthro-neuro-historian (a new discipline that will exist 50 years from now) to study the neuronal networks of dead people. She can study the way in which I perceive the world, and reassess my results in a new context. She would conclude for instance, since Omer has problems with his hairs, he subconsciously ignored to interview with hairy males. This knowledge would not change my results, but it will change the my subjects from "random villagers" to "random non-hairy villagers."

Let me know about what you think.

İnsanlar ve Maymunlar

Hayat devam ediyor.

Ermeni Meselesi - Yilmaz Arguden'e Cevap

Yilmaz Arguden'in yazisi
Merhaba,

Sayin Argüden'in yazisi da Gunduz Bey'in akillica konusmasini yansitiyor ve önemli belgelerden alıntılar içeriyor.
